NISSAN ENGINE DEFECTS PATHFINDER, QUEST & TRUCKS 95-96
ARE YOU DRIVING ONE NOW?
Nissan is having a "silent recall" on 95-96 selected Path finders, Quests & Nissan trucks. The Pathfinders fall within this VIN# range with numbers ending in...075996 through... 114418. IN these autos Nissan placed defective engines. The pistons are not lubricated correctly & cause them to "slap" against the piston wall with resultant increased wear & tear on the engine. It will not last as long as it would nor maly. It may also affect engine performance. The faulty lubrication defect is most evident after a period of "cold soaking" the vehicle. A knocking sound can be heard with inital start up, which lessens as the vehicle warms. This can be diagnosed by your Nissan dealer & if your vehicle VIN# falls within the range its more than likely affected with the defective engine. Nissan placed these engines in approximately 100,000 vehicles before they changed their engine design sometime in 1996. Dealers were supposed to disclose the potential engine defects to consumers at time of purchase. This is how they justified the continued sale of these faulty autos.

WHAT CAN YOU DO?
If your VIN # falls within the stated range you should take your vehicle to Nissan to diagnose the problem. Be prepared to be assertive in your pursuit of finding a solution. Nissan is not forthcoming with the help you need. Insist on having repairs made with only new parts. Folks in south ern states may not hear the problem due to warmer tempera tures in their area. IT DOES NOT HAVE TO BE COLD TO BE DIAG NOSED. Nissan can perform a test on the vehicle to ascer tain if it has the problem. If you have a Quest or truck, 95 -96 call Nissan Consumer Affairs with your VIN# to see if your vehicle may be one of those effected. phone # 800-647-7261.
We'd also like to know if you were told about the potential problem at the time of the sale if you purchased your vehicle new? If purchased used, did Nissan inform you by letter of the possible engine defect & explain the extended warranty that would be in effect if you owned such a vehicle? Write us, the more information we have the easier it will be to pursue a fair & reasonable resolution with Nissan.
We have recently obtained the vin #'s for the Quest van's that are effected. The range is as follows, 816604-912495.

WHAT WILL NISSAN DO FOR YOU?
If your engine is diagnosed with the piston slap malfunction Nissan will offer to put an engine into your vehicle to replace the faulty one they put in. Nissan often doesn't mention the engine has many remanufactured parts. Why should you accept this? They don't put these engines into their new vehicles, is it acceptable practice to correct their mistake in this fashion? Also Nissan refuses to pay for alternate transportation while they have your vehicle in the shop for 1-3 days correcting the mistake they made. They ex pect the consumer to shoulder these costs. Nissan stands to lose upwards of 400 million dollars if they go public & make this a formal recall. It could be the largest & most expen sive recall in the auto industry to date. Do you see why they are keeping "silent" about their error? Contact us at the e-mail address below. We'd like to be of help with questions you may have & to hear about you experiences with Nissan in attempts to rectify the situation. We look forward to hearing from you.
